My Top 5 Blog Posts Of 2016

December 28, 2016

This time of year is for reflection before the planning starts in the New Year. Thanks to the wisdom in Michael Hyatt’s book ‘Platform’, looking back on the year my focus for this blog was on writing posts that were more resourceful than informational. This change of strategy in my writing proved to be popular with my readers as I saw a notable increase in traffic for each of my blog posts. As always blogging and social media is a steep and never ending learning curve.

Here are my most viewed posts of 2016.

Ideas On Backing Up

Following on from my previous blog post ‘4 reasons to back up your photos and videos’ here are my thoughts on backing up your valuable images and videos.

I’m sure there are many other file storage/sharing websites available, however Dropbox is my site of choice and seems to be popular among photographers and non photographers alike. Dropbox.com is an excellent online file storage and sharing website that’s easy to use and navigate around.

A free Dropbox account allows a very generous 2GB of storage. This may not sound a lot of storage for anyone who shoots in RAW however if you just use it as temporary storage it can suit just fine. For anyone not shooting in RAW, this is plenty of space for jpegs etc.  I don’t use Dropbox for permanent storage/back up, however it is great for temporary back up when I’m traveling and for file sharing with family, friends and clients. How To Create Inspirational Quote Images

I wrote this blog post in early 2015, however on reposting it this year it made the top 5 most viewed posts of 2016.

Following on from my blog post  ‘Are you getting your dose of daily inspiration?, here is information on how to create what I now refer to as inspirational ‘quote images’ that I post daily on social media.

To create ‘quote images’, you will need two things.

1. A source of quotes that resonate with you

2. An online tool/ website where you can turn these quotes into ‘quote images’

Ideas On Backing Up!

October 28, 2016

back-up

Following on from my previous blog post ‘4 reasons to back up your photos and videos’ here are my thoughts on backing up your valuable images and videos.

There are many file/photo storage/sharing websites/apps available, Google images, iCloud, Flickr to name a few.  Dropbox is my site of choice and seems to be popular among photographers and non photographers alike. Dropbox is an excellent online file storage/sharing website that’s easy to use and easy to navigate around.

A free Dropbox account allows 2GB of storage. If you are looking for storage for your smartphone images then this is plenty of space.

For anyone who shoots in RAW (very large files) this is not a lot of space, however if you use it as temporary storage it can suit just fine

I recently upgraded to Dropbox pro which allows a huge 1TB of storage. Let me put this in context – in the 7 years I have been a Travel Photographer shooting in RAW (very large files) I have yet to fill 1TB of storage. 1TB is 1024GBs which is an enormous amount of storage space!!! Dropbox pro is well worth the investment especially for backing up images from your smartphone as they can be backed up as soon as they are taken ensuring you never lose any of those special and precious memories.

dropbox

So when is the best time to back up your images and videos?

You will answer this questions by asking another question – how much time worth of images/videos are you willing to lose?

1 year? 1 month? 1 week? 1 day?

If you shoot images/videos every day then backing up day by day would be worth a thought. On the other end of the spectrum if you don’t shoot images/videos regularly then backing up less frequent is fine. It really depends how much time of images/videos you are ok with losing!

If you have a good system in place, backing up should only take a few minutes (or can be instant with most apps) whereas regret at the loss of precious memories will no doubt last a lot longer.

back-up1

Whether your images are shot with your smartphone or with a professional SLR it’s good practice to have a solid back up system.

My back up system is something that has evolved over many years of trial and error and also from learning from more experienced photographers. Here is my current back up system for my professional images.

As soon as possible after shooting, I download my images from the memory cards to my laptop and also to 2 separate external hard drives (EHDs). This means my images are stored in 4 different places – SLR memory card, laptop and 2 EHDs.

As I edit my images on my laptop and carry out work required i.e. image editing, creation of books, prints etc, I back up to the 2 EHDs every week. This means my work is always in 3 different locations and I will never lose more than 1 week’s work (sometimes I back up more frequently depending on the volume of work created in the  week).

When my work is completely finished and all prints, books etc have been handed over to my clients I back up all of my work to the same 2 EHDs mentioned above and also a 3rd EHD in a different physical location. I then clear my SLR memory cards for reuse and also clear the work from my laptop freeing up valuable space in both. I am safe in the knowledge that all of my work is now backed up in 3 separate EHDs in different locations which gives me the piece of mind I require.

Storing my EHDs in different physical locations was a tip I learned from professional landscape photographer Peter Cox and it has served me well so far.

(For images shot with my smartphone (non professional), I back up to Dropbox regularly and follow the same process above every month)

photo

I’m sure a lot of photographers use online or cloud storage for permanent back up, I use these for temporary back up but for a long term permanent solution I like to know I have more control over where my images and work related to them are. In saying that I’m always changing and improving my back up system to ensure it is safe, frequent enough and takes as little time as possible and so maybe cloud storage is something I will use in the future.

Are you backing up your precious memories?

Are you backing up frequently enough?

Do you have a back up system that works for you?

Safe Travels,

Siobhain

In this digital world most people own some sort of a camera whether it’s an SLR, digicam or smartphone camera. No matter what you use to shoot images or videos it’s a must to regularly back up your images.

Here are 4 reasons why

1

If your phone/camera/memory card gets stolen and your images are not backed up they are gone forever, there is no way of getting them back unless of course you catch the robber, they haven’t damaged your images and are happy to hand your device back!

2

If your phone/camera/memory card gets damaged in any way chances are so will your photos and videos –  worst case scenario they will be damaged beyond repair!

Same goes for losing your device, of course all will be well if you find it again but wouldn’t you like to have piece of mind that you have backed up your treasured memories just in case it doesn’t turn up!

3

Your phone memory and memory card is of a finite size. Once you reach available memory space you will need to delete, move or back up images and videos to create space for new ones. Phones have a lot of space and the size of image files are quiet small, however if you use an SLR and shoot images in RAW (which is highly recommended) then your memory cards will fill up pretty fast.

4

If you download your images/videos to your laptop/computer, this will also have a finite size and will fill up pretty quick depending on the number of images you shoot, the number you edit etc. My Mac Book Pro has a memory for 250GB which you would think is large enough but with the amount of images I shoot in RAW this memory is filled faster than you would think.

Whether your images and videos are personal or professional they are precious and the moments captured are once off that can never be uniquely captured again.

If you don’t already do so I hope you will consider backing up your images regularly,

In my next post I’ll go through the process I use to back up my images whether shot with my smartphone, digicam or professional SLR.

There are many online websites where you can create photo books. My favourite and the one I have been using for many years is Blurb.

Blurb books are easy to create, easy to order, are very reasonably priced. I am a big fan of Blurb books and have used them to create 9 Travel Photography Books (6 pictured below) and 4 Wedding Books – see the link to my portfolio here.

blurb6

My Travel Photography Books created by Blurb

Here are 10 steps to creating your very own Blurb book,

blurb1

Download the Blurb BookSmart software from http://www.blurb.com – here is the link to do so – Download BookSmart

blurb2

Open the BookSmart software and choose a name for your book and the template you want to use, there are many templates to choose from depending on what style of book you are looking for. You can even make a FaceBook Blurb Book and an Instagram Blurb Book using your images from these social media platforms. As all of my books are photography books, I use the Travel Photo Book template. There are also a range of sizes to choose from, I have created books using a variety of sizes and have been immensely happy with all of them.

blurb3

Upload your images to the book template you have created.

Images need to be at a high enough resolution allowing an image to fill a page if required.  If the resolution of the images are too low the software will readjust them to the optimum size on the page.

blurb4

Starting from the start, create your cover page – there are many templates for cover pages that can be semi edited.  Most formats include a title for the front page and an optional title for the spine of the book, I usually use both.

When you have created your cover page,  fill in your index page which is optional. I usually use this index page as an introduction to my books. For my Travel Photography Books, I use it to introduce myself and the content of the book. For Wedding Books, I use it as an introduction to the happy couple accompanied by one of their favourite images.

blurb5

Now comes the fun part, creating the body of the book. There are a variety of layout templates to choose from for each page or you can create your own custom made layout templates. There is no end to the creativity that can be unleashed here. Pages can be added easily and it Is here that you determine how many pages your book will contain. The price of your book is dependent on the number of pages you have in your book.

Click here for Blurb book pricing and a handy pricing calculator.

There are also a variety of background colours to choose from. I tend to use either black or white backgrounds depending on the type of book and the type of images. See different colour backgrounds below, the black background suits my Cuban images while the white background is more suited to my images from india.

blurb4

The Photographer’s Guide To Cuba (using a black background)

blurb5

The Photographer’s Guide To India (using a white background)

blurb6

When you have created your book I recommend that you check it once, twice and three times – if you have time check it once more just to be sure! When your book is ordered you can no longer edit it and so it is well worth your time to check your book a number of times ensuring

  • You have included all required images

  • All images are within the page borders highlighted

  • There are no blank pages

  • All text is in the correct place

  • All text has the correct spelling

  • You are happy with the cost of your book – see pricing list in step 5 above

When you are completely happy with your book then you can upload your book to Blurb.com. The time this takes will depend on the size of your book and the speed of your internet connection.

blurb7

Once uploaded, it is time to choose the type of paper you would like your book to be printed on. You can choose from many different types depending on the look you are going for. The cover type of your book is also chosen at this stage. You can choose from any of these fabulous cover types – Softcover, Hardcover ImageWrap and Hardcover Dust Jacket.  My favourite cover type is Hardcover ImageWrap. This is a highly professional finish that looks and feels amazing.

blurb8

That’s it, your work on your book is compete, time to hand it over to Blurb to work their magic. Order your book and share with friends and family on your favourite social media networks by making your book public in Blurb’s bookstore or keep it private and send a link to the lucky few!

Sit back, relax and wait for your custom made book to be delivered by Blurb,

If you want to sell your book through the Blurb website you can register it for sale here Blurb.com and decide what profit you will earn after costs to create the book are deducted by Blurb. You can also register your book for sale on Amazon. Click on the Amazon logo below to view my author page and my books available through Amazon.

fine-art-prints

Anyone who is a photographer knows there is a lot more to photography than taking pictures.

From preparation to editing to marketing to the ever evolving world of social media, the life of a photographer is varied and complex. And so that is why I am grateful to those who assist and support me on this complex yet exciting journey as a Travel Photographer.

I shoot and edit all of my own work, however the printing of my Fine Art prints is outsourced to whom I refer to as the best printing studio on the planet!

imgres

RightBrain is a cool, unique and Hahnemühle certified Fine Art printing studio based in Cork City, owned and run by Tony O’Brien whom I have had the pleasure of working with for many years. Tony’s high end and highly professional printing process’s enables my work to come to life in a way that is just not possible with ‘run of the mill’ printing/papers.

Tony handles my prints with great care and his attention to detail is second to none. As well as creating excellent quality prints Tony is open and generous with his time and his knowledge of printing, photography and Fine Art.

If you are looking for prints of the highest quality, you will not be disappointed with the finished product and the outstanding customer service that RightBrain offers.

blurb3

Man in Prayer – Bhutan – Printed on Hahnemühle Photo Rag 308 paper that allows colours to come to life and pop off the paper without oversaturation

There are many types of papers to choose from, a full list can be seen on the RightBrain website here – Fine Art paper

All the different type of papers achieve a different look, finish and feel to the Fine Art prints they create, Tony is always on hand to give the best advice for the type of Fine Art to match your style of photography.

On excellent advice from Tony, I use 2 types of paper, one is Hahnemühle Photo Rag Baryta 315. The gloss finish achieved with this paper will be familiar to the viewer as the glossy finish is similar to regular photographic prints. However the difference is in the depth of colour, the richness of the whites and creams and the almost 3D like quality of the subjects coming to life on this luxurious paper.

Tony’s description of this paper on his website completely sums it up

‘Hahnemühle Photo Rag Baryta 315 – the best quality baryta on the market today. The surface shows fibre from the cotton beneath, the white is beautifully warm. A paper with incredible character and depth’.

blurb3

This black and white Cuban street scene is particularly suited to the gloss finish and enriched creams/whites of Hahnemühle Photo Rag Baryta 315

The other paper I use is a matte finish – Hahnemühle Photo Rag 308, this gives more of a print look to my images, meaning depending how you look at them, they can look like drawings, paintings or photographs. Beauty, with this paper, is truly in the eye of the beholder.

The feel of this paper is exquisite, it is a heavy cotton like feel, holding it you know high quality is in your hands.

Again Tony’s description of this paper on his website is spot on,

‘Hahnemühle Photo Rag 308 – a heavy weight variant of the classic velvety smooth clean white matte paper. Suitable for photography and art reproduction. Great for pinning, portfolios etc’.

blurb2

This Vietnamese street scene is particularly suited to the matte surface of Hahnemühle Photo Rag 308

As a Digigraphie certified printing studio, RightBrain provides Digigraphie certified Limited Editions of Fine Art prints.

You decide the size of the print, the paper to be used and the number of Limited Editions  required and Tony will print these one by one as required certifying each Limited Edition print with a Digigraphie certificate and a Digigraphie embossment on the print itself.

See information below taken from RightBrain’s website

‘At RightBrain we are authorised to produce Digigraphie prints which are certified as being printed to the very highest standards with rigorous 3rd party auditing of the colour management aspect to ensure quality and consistency. Digigraphie prints can be produced on a range of approved materials called ‘Signature Worthy Papers’. A signed and stamped Digigraphie Certificate is issued with each print and the border of the print is embossed with our official Digigraphie cold press stamp. You also have the opportunity to register your print and place an image on the Digigraphie website for others to see. We are the only lab in Ireland certified by Epson to produce Digigraphie prints.’

My second Limited Edition  – Bhutanese Candles – was shot in a monastery in Paro in the Land of Gross National Happiness – the spiritual Kingdom of Bhutan.

These Limited editions can also be seen on the Epson Digigraphie website

The Aran Islands are a trio of islands located on the west coast of Ireland.  The islands are, in decreasing size, Inis Mor, Inis Meain and Inis Oirr. Most islanders are fluent in English however the language most used by all is Irish. For those of you visiting from mainland Ireland, I highly recommend you brush up on your ‘cupla focal’ before you visit any of the islands, if you have any Irish at all you will be expected to use it!!!!

The Aran Islands are one of Ireland’s many gems. Whatever type of break you are looking for, the Aran islands will not disappoint.  Whether you are looking for a quiet break away from the hustle and bustle or a few days of mad craic, or something in between the Aran Islands has something for everyone.

Mike and I recently spent a long weekend on Inis Mor. The fact that we were lucky enough to enjoy an ‘Irish heatwave’ that weekend was an added bonus. However, I’m sure a great time is guaranteed on Inis Mor no matter what the weather is like.

Here are my 5 top things to do if you visit the Aran Islands

1

EXPLORE THE ISLAND BY BIKE

There are just a few modes of transport available to explore inis Mor – tour bus, bike and horse and carriage. How you explore the island will possibly depend on how much time you have on the island. As we had lots on time to explore, Mike and I chose bikes as our preferred way of getting around the island.

At the end of the pier where the Aran island ferry comes in you will find tour buses, horse and carriages and Aran Bike Hire.  Aran Bike Hire will be on your right hand side at the end of the pier. They offer bikes of every kind imaginable from electric bikes, 2 seater bikes and numerous types of bikes for children. The cost to hire the bikes is €20 with a €20 refundable deposit on return of the bike. This is very reasonable and includes a free map of the island, excellent advice and free roadside assistance which thankfully we didn’t need.

Everywhere on inis Mor is within cycling distance, it’s a great way to appreciate the raw and unique beauty of the island and of course a great way to work up a hunger and thirst for the next best thing to do on the island.

OL, BIA AGUS CRAIC (DRINK, FOOD AND FUN)

Visiting any of the 3 pubs on Inis Mor is in itself an experience. The pubs are a mixture of Irish speaking locals and tourists speaking many other languages.

We found an excellent pub to eat, drink and listen to music in.

Joe Watty’s is a must visit – their food is delicous, their staff are courteous, friendly, highly professional and the music plays all day and late into the night ensuring a great night for tourists and locals alike.

No visit to the Aran Islands is complete without having a meal, drink and a late night at Joe Wattys.

SPEND TIME ON KILMURVEY BEACH

There is nothing more fabulous than a relaxing day at the beach and there is nowhere more beautiful than the beaches on Inis Mor. Kilmurvey beach is located about 20 minutes cycle outside of Kilronan village on the road to Dun Aonghasa. It’s a beautiful blue flag beach that would rival any of those on the mediterranean coast.

Good advice given to us by Cait O’ Flaherty whom we stayed with on Inis Mor, was to get to Kilmurvey beach early in the morning before the first ferry arrives in at 11am. This was advice we took and was so glad we did.  When we arrived at Kilmurvey beach early in the morning we were able to enjoy the peace and solitude of the beach and surrounding areas and capture it’s beauty before the visitors of the day arrived.

4

TREK TO DUN AONGHASA

Dun Aonghasa is a must see if you visit Inis Mor. There are several prehistoric forts on the Aran Islands, Dun Aonghasa being the most famous of them. It’s about a 20 minute trek up to Dun Aonghasa, mostly on stone and so good shoes/trainers are a must if visiting here. There are spectacular views at the top of Dun Aonghasa as it overlooks a 100 metre high cliff.  There are no rails or protection from this 100 metre drop and so if visiting with small children take extra care.

There is a lovely little cafe just across from the visitor centre with great food to build up your energy levels after the trek down from Dun Aonghasa or to fuel up before you trek up!

VISIT TEAMPULL BHEANAIN (SMALL CHAPEL)

To say the landscape on Inis Mor is rugged is an understatement. It is rugged, rural and immensely beautiful.

One of the most beautiful views we saw on Inis Mor was from Teampull Bheanain (Small Chapel).

Teampull Bheanain is thought to be the smallest church in the world. Dating back to the 11th or 12th C, there is now just 4 walls left of the once active Christian church. It is a most beautiful place to visit with exquisite views in all directions.

The steep path up to Teampull Bheanain is overgrown and full of rocks and stones however this only adds to the adventure and the views are well worth the effort.

If you only have a few hours in Abu Dhabi I highly recommend your first stop to be Jumeirah hotel at Etihad Towers. The luxurious shops on the ground floor of Etihad Towers are worth a look around as they prepare you for the opulence of the Jumeirah hotel.

Make your way to the Observation Deck 300 on the 74th floor where the most spectacular views of Abu Dhabi await you. This 360 degree view is the highest vantage point in Abu Dhabi and enables magnificent views of The Emirates Palace, The Breakwater area, the City skyline and developing areas of Abu Dhabi.

Everyone deserves a treat and no better treat than a nice meal here in the Observation Deck 300. The food and service is as spectacular as the views.

If you have a bit more time or are staying overnight then why not dine at the most luxurious hotel in Abu Dhabi – The Emirates Palace. This hotel absolutely lives up to it’s 5 star luxury status! Luxurious and classy with down to earth staff who offer incredible service and a warm welcome.

I highly recommend to book a table at BBQ Al Qasr where you can enjoy evening drinks on the private beach as the sun sets followed by dinner al fresco in one of the beachside verandas.

Even though the weather is very hot in Abu Dhabi it can get a little chilly by the beach in the evening. No need to worry as the Emirates Palace staff will provide you with blankets to keep you cosy.

The Sheikh Zayed Grande Mosque is a must see. A unique structure surrounded by intricate architecture and design, every part of the magnificent building is a feast for the eyes. Inside the Grand Mosque you will be greeted by the world’s largest chandelier and the world’s largest carpet upon which generations of prayers have been said.

The Grande Mosque is an immensely respectful place and so visitors are asked to show the same respect by dressing accordingly, do research the dress code before you go.

The Grande Mosque is a photographer’s dream with it’s abundance of reflections and leading lines.

The following paragraph is taken from Visit Abu Dhabi’s website, this is an excellent summary of what the Grand Mosque is,

‘This architectural work of art is one the world’s largest mosques, with a capacity for an astonishing 40,000 worshippers. It features 82 domes, over a 1,000 columns, 24 carat gold gilded chandeliers and the world’s largest hand knotted carpet. The main prayer hall is dominated by one of the world’s largest chandeliers –10 metres in diameter, 15 metres in height and weighing twelve tonnes. The mosque’s first ceremony was the funeral of its namesake, Sheikh Zayed, who is buried at the site.
Reflective pools surround the mosque, amplifying its beauty. The striking white and gold colours shining in the sun are transformed at night by a unique lightning system which reflects the phases of the moon.’

Immerse yourself in the culture and traditions of the United Arab Emirates on this excellent desert safari. Starting with what can only be described as a rollercoaster ride in a jeep you will be driven up and down sand dunes at almost 90 degree angles!!  Once out in the middle of the desert you are introduced to a real bedouin camp. The following activities are available to take part in, I highly recommend you do as many as possible.

  • Sand Boarding
  • Camel Riding
  • Traditional Dress
  • Quad Biking
  • Henna Tattoes

After a tasty BBQ al fresco you will be treated to a traditional belly dance after which you are invited to take a moment to enjoy the star filled sky and the peace of the desert. This is a most enjoyable evening and an absolute must if you are staying in Abu Dhabi!

Chances are you can relate to most if not all of the above.

If so CONGRATULATIONS on winning the Lottery Of Life.

What are you doing to celebrate your win?

Ironically, there isn’t a monetary lottery on the planet that can buy any of the above!!!

The list above is actually infinite as there are so many wonderful things to be grateful for that do not cost a thing, I’m sure you could add a few more items to the list yourself,

Annual Review 2015

January 3, 2016

ANNUAL REVIEW (1)

It’s hard to believe yet another year has gone by. Time really does go by very fast which makes it so important to spend your precious time with people you love and doing work that you love!!

In the Lean/Continuous Improvement world we carry out ‘Hansei’ which is Japanese for ‘reflection’. Hansei allows us to look back at what has been achieved so we can use lessons learned to determine future direction for improvement and growth. Every year I carry out an Annual Review which is a personal ‘Hansei’ on my life so I can continue to improve and grow.

An annual review is a great way of reviewing goals set at the beginning of the year and reflecting on how the year went to see what worked so you can build on the successes and see what didn’t work so you can adjust and change direction.

I find an annual review helps me to plan better which in turn enables me to focus more and get more done so I can continue to improve my life and the life of those around me.

An annual review is also hugely beneficial when setting goals for the coming year.

I have been carrying out an annual review for a few years now and started publishing my annual review on my blog 2 years ago. See annual reviews from 2104 and 2013 linked below,

Annual Review 2013

Annual Review 2014

The system I use for my annual review is still a work in progress and evolves year on year as my own life evolves. When I first carried out my annual review I started with a template shared and used by Chris Guillebeau. If you are interested in starting your own annual review, here is Chris Guillebeau’s How To Conduct your own Annual Review. This is a great read and highlights how powerful planning and reviewing can be.

Chris’s updated annual review template can be found here – Annual Review Template, I used this initially then changed and modified it over the years.  Chris’s 2015 annual review can be found here which will give you an insight into why I follow him and why I travelled all the way to Oslo a few years ago to attend his celebration for visiting every country in the world, he is a very inspirational guy!

To say carrying out an annual review has transformed how I plan and achieve goals would be a huge understatement. Last year it took me quiet a while to compile the annual review – this year, learning from that lesson, I carried out mini monthly reviews as well as the larger quarterly reviews outlined in the template linked above. This has made the annual review process much more streamlined and has ensured I changed direction when required and not a moment too soon. These mini reviews also helped me track metrics much more closely. I’m not sure if this is a result of planning more, being more organised or the fact that my passion for Lean has also awoken a passion for metrics of all sorts! More about metrics below!

Similar to most years I met some of my goals, exceeded a few, dropped some during the year and did not do as well as I would have hoped in others –  my goals like life itself are a work in progress!

As always, Mike, my family and my friends are my reason for everything.

So here goes, in no particular order, my annual review for 2015.

TRAVEL

This year, long haul travel was put on hold to help me learn more about and improve my finances. In saying this I still seemed to be packing a suitcase often enough to keep me sane but my travels this year were mostly around my beautiful home of Ireland (North and South) instead of long haul.

My first trip of the year took my Mom and I back to Belfast to bring my Travel Photography exhibition home. My Travel Photography exhibition was displayed in the arrivals hall of George Best Belfast City airport from August 2014 to March 2015.

I am immensely grateful to all 4 airports (Cork, Dublin, Shannon and George Best Belfast City) for hosting my Travel Photography exhibition over the past few years. Following my exhibition in George Best Belfast City airport I wrote a blog post on how I created my Travel Photography Exhibition that can be viewed here – How to create a Travel Photography exhibition.

As always big thanks to Tony from RightBrain Fine Art printing studio – Cork City for my Fine Art prints, Donie and Denis in Thomas Street Framing gallery – Limerick City for mounting my prints and Barbara in Barbara Hubert Bookbindery –  Cork City for my gorgeous custom made comments books.

Northern Ireland has the most amazing scenery, from the scenic walk to Carrick-a-Rede bridge, across the bridge itself (which is not for those with a fear of heights) to the unique and breathtaking Giants Causeway…..Northern Ireland is a must see.

Belfast is a fascinating city with so much to do. Beautiful shops, markets, restaurants and architecture make this city an excellent city break. Belfast is home to one of the most fascinating museums I have ever been in – The Titanic Museum. A trip to Belfast with Mike later in the year became the 3rd time I have visited the Titanic Museum and it most certainly won’t be the last. If you are looking for a city break with lots to do I cannot recommend Belfast highly enough.

Mike and I spent a relaxing week in Lanzerote in June and took many city breaks around Ireland throughout the year. One of my favourite places in Ireland is Killarney and I was lucky enough to spend many weekends down there during the summer including a fabulous weekend with my entire family.

I admit I did miss long haul travel this year, I’m looking forward to seeing what 2016 brings travel wise.

As mentioned above I took a break from long haul travel to learn more about and improve my finances. Travel and Photography are both pretty expensive hobbies and when you join them together they become one that can drive your Visa card or any other card you use into overdrive! I’m happy to say this year saw me pay off the final payment on my ‘Travel Photography’ loan and become much more stable in relation to finances. This is a huge achievement for me as I don’t make an active income from Travel Photography and so it is still very much supplemented by my full time job (when I had one – I was made redundant in November – more about that later).

Life and the lessons life teaches me has changed my financial views, habits and outlook over the years. My financial views, habits and outlook did not change by themselves, I have my boyfriend Mike and my family (esp. my Mom) to thank for their help and also the professional help, support and advice from the following wonderful people.

Patricia O’Donnell is a financial advisor I met over 6 years ago who has become not only a force for positive change in my life but also a much trusted friend. If you are local and looking for financial advice of any sort and want to speak with someone who has a passion for helping people to find financial freedom then Patricia is your lady.

At Chris Guillebeau’s party in Oslo (mentioned above), as well as meeting Chris I met loads more inspirational people. One of these inspirational people was JD Roth. JD founded the hugely successful finance blog ‘Get Rich Slowly’ which he subsequently sold and can now be found at ‘Money Boss’ where he shares excellent financial advice. In 2014 in conjunction with Chris, JD launched his ‘Get Rich Slowly’ Unconventional Guide which he calls ‘everything I’ve learned about saving and investing during a decade as a money writer. It’s like the entire Money Boss website condensed into one tidy little package’.

I bought the basic package and this was by far the best investment I have ever made in relation to financial freedom. JD’s year long e-mails and ‘Be Your Own CFO’ guide introduced me to information and tips n’ tricks that I never knew existed and have totally changed how I view and treat finance. If you are looking for financial advice it’s absolutely worth following JD’s blog ‘Money Boss’.

Like all goals, some financial goals I met, some I didn’t and some I just need to work much harder on!

PHOTO

As mentioned above my fourth Travel Photography airport exhibition was hosted by George Best Belfast City airport until March 2015.

One of my goals this year was to find a stockist for my Fine Art prints where people can view and purchase them as framed prints. Where best to showcase my prints than in the Framing Gallery where I get all of my prints framed/mounted in my home city of Limerick.

A selection of my Cuba Fine Art prints are now displayed in Thomas Street Framing Gallery in Limerick City. I am very proud to have my images displayed in this gallery as Donie and Denis have been framing prints/images for me for many years and framed/mounted all of the images used in my airport exhibitions. If you are looking for local, professional mounting or framing this is the place to go.

This year I created a Fine Art catalogue using Blurb where you can view the images available on my website as well as a few new ones. This Fine Art catalogue can be viewed here – Siobhain Danaher Travel Photography Fine Art Catalogue . This brings the number of Blurb Travel Books I have published to eight, these books are also available on Amazon.

Thanks to Art Cards Ireland, there are now 8 different types of greeting cards available to match my Fine Art prints. I’m currently researching where the best place to sell these is. If you are looking for a company to create professional customised greeting cards, I cannot recommend Art Cards Ireland highly enough. Their cards are beautiful and they are a dream to work with.

This year I completed 7 ‘non travel’ photography projects. I thoroughly enjoyed each and every one of these. Most projects were for friends and family with a few high profile clients thrown in!

LEAN

Anyone who knows me well or has worked with me knows I love Lean.

I love Lean culture, Lean tools, Lean methodology –  basically I love everything about Lean. I have seen first hand how Lean tools, systems and approach can transform how people work, increase productivity (and in turn increase profit), allow creativity and innovation to fluorish and increase employee/customer satisfaction and engagement.

Last year I wrote in my annual review of my delight in starting my new job as Continuous Improvement Manager. Just over a year into my new role I was made redundant. Yes you read correctly – redundant!! I really loved the work, learned so much during the year, made fabulous friends to whom I am very grateful to for making me feel so welcome and embracing positive change. However, when the time came to move on I was actually happy to leave. Professionally there are very few things worse than getting up every morning and going to a job where your skills, experience and contribution are not valued. From personal experience I can tell you it is soul destroying. This is the antithesis of a Lean culture where not only is every single employee respected and valued but they are developed, mentored and empowered to become the very best they can be.

Every cloud has a silver lining and over the past few weeks the time off work has afforded me the luxury to be able to spend quality time with my family and dedicate time to build my own Lean website/blog where I will share information and thoughts on Lean in business and life. My experience of being made redundant makes me even more committed to sharing the positive benefits of Lean which I will do through my new website/blog. Launch date yet to be confirmed! Watch this space!

Lean is traditionally used in business to remove waste and create value, however in 2015 I used Lean principles to ‘Lean’ all areas of my personal life – I implemented 5S in some areas of our home, created kanbans for certain household consumables and removed items in my life that no longer serve me. I will continue to ‘Lean’ my life and am looking forward to sharing more about how Lean can help to streamline your business and life in my new website/blog.

SOCIAL MEDIA

An absolute must for any business in this digital age is internet marketing.

Like most things in life, the more I learn about social media the more I realise I don’t know. Also the more I learn about social media the more I realise it is essential to a thriving business in todays global market. Finally the more I learn about social media the more I love it. I love how it provides a platform for ideas to be shared, voices to be heard and how it allows global connections to be created at the click of a mouse.

My interest in internet marking has grown steadily over the years since I set up this blog in and started using social media to share my Travel Photography journey. Combining my love of Lean and social media, the majority of my blog posts this year were about social media and online resources available to increase efficiency using automation, outsourcing and various online tools and sites. The following posts were the most popular from 2015

How to schedule inspirational quote images

How online outsourcing can help you build a global team

In 2014 I started using Upwork (formally O-Desk) to create a global team. In terms of business this was one of the best decisions I ever made. It has freed me up to be more creative and do more with my time. #Lean. Thanks to Upwork and the amazing people I work with I managed to create hundreds of inspirational quote images and post these daily to numerous social media sites. Towards the end of Q3 I started to post a travel image every day from my 1000’s of travel images to numerous social media sites.

Visits to and views of this blog have steadily increased since my first blog post in 2012. In 2015 I published the very same number of blog posts as I did in 2014, however the views to my blog posts doubled as did the number of visitors to my blog. This was due to the fact that I learned more about internet marketing and how social media, traffic and blogging actually works.

As I mentioned above, the more I learn about internet marketing the less I think I know as it changes and evolves so fast.

Just like the Lean world and the world of Continuous Improvement, the only way to definitively know if you are improving is to have ‘fact based’ metrics. I currently track 16 metrics across 6 social media platforms. Each one of these metrics increased in 2015 which means I’m moving in the right direction!!! In saying that, growth is slow –  slow but steady!

I have many people to thank for sharing their wisdom with me through their blogs and books in relation to all things social media/internet marketing/entrepreneurship –  Chris Guillebeau, Natalie Sisson, Greg CantyRobin SharmaBrendon Burchard, Michael Hyatt, Kim Garst, Dale Partridge to name a few.

Charity 1

It’s nice to give back. I have been supporting various charities for many years and year on year I try to give more to each charity whether this is monetary support or volunteering my time. I continued to support these charities in 2015 but didn’t give as much in donations or time as I would have hoped. This is something I certainly need to work on in the coming year.

MIND BODY SPIRIT

For me, it is nurturing Mind, Body and Spirit that keeps everything else in good health.

Mind – I keep my mind healthy, grounded and nurtured by reading, meditating and journalling. The human mind is so fragile and complex and it doesn’t take much for the stresses and strains of the world to overwhelm the mind. That is why it is as important to feed and nurture your mind as it is to feed and nurture your body.

I absolutely love reading and this year I discovered the joy of audio books. In 2015 I read and listened to so many books I wrote a separate blog post on ‘My Top 20 Books Of 2015

Body – ‘Health is Wealth’ is a well known saying that is so so true. If you or one of your loved ones is sick there is no money in the world can give you or your loved ones back the health once enjoyed. I have always been aware of this saying and seem to hear it many times but it has never made more sense to me than it has in the past few years as I have watched family and family friends battling illnesses.

For many years I made ‘New Year Resolutions’ in relation to health such as be more healthy, exercise more, stop smoking (when I smoked), drink less alcohol (when I drank alcohol). Year after year I found I was making the same ‘New Year Resolutions’ which would suggest things weren’t going quite as planned!

Now as the New Year rings in and I set my goals for the year I make lifestyle changes instead of New Year’s Resolutions. In 2015 I made a lifestyle decision to stop drinking alcohol, coffee and diet coke. Those who know me best know I have more than a fondness for all three of these drinks. I thought I would find it hard to stop drinking alcohol as being Irish it is pretty much part of our heritage but not drinking coffee turned out be the most challenging of the three!

Every year I say I will commit to exercising more and being more healthy, I have a roller coaster relationship with this goal. I signed up for personal training and yoga at work which I enjoyed immensely but could have attended more and pushed myself harder. I continue to enjoy my favourite sport swimming but could also be pushing myself a bit harder in the pool. I’d love to be a runner – when I see my boyfriend Mike, family and friends competing in 5k, 7k, 10k runs and marathons I am more than impressed with their dedication and ability however I don’t think I’m suited to being a runner! This year I ran the Great Limerick Run 10k which I enjoyed but couldn’t walk right for a week afterwards!! Note to self – l’m more of a fish than a cheetah!

My diet is healthy but could be better.

Spirit – Spirituality is a huge part of my life. For me spirituality is about nurturing my inner world so I can function optimally in the outer world. Spirituality for me is where Mind, Body and Spirit all merge together, I ensure that what nurtures my mind and body (mentioned above) also nurtures my soul.

Two spiritual teachers who have been a huge influence in my life are Dr Wayne Dyer and Eckhart Tolle. In 2015 two of my goals were to meet/attend talks by Dr Wayne Dyer and Eckhart Tolle.

I had planned to travel to London in October to attend a talk by Dr Wayne Dyer, however this was not meant to be as sadly and unexpectedly Wayne passed away on August 30th at the age of 75. He leaves a legacy of positivity with his books and teachings. the world lost a great teacher this year.

Eckhart Tolle came to Belfast in September and I attended his talk in the Belfast Waterfront Hall. It was, as expected, a joyful, inspirational and insightful talk. Just as he does in his books, Eckhart shared his wisdom and knowledge with immense humour and humility. I very much look forward to attending more of his talks as he tours around the world.

METRICS

My goals set for the past few years have been a little vague, non measurable and were open to a little more than a bit of interpretation.

Metrics are a huge part of Lean/Continuous Improvement teachings and so last year I set metric based goals which gives me much more clarity and accountability than before. Metric based goals allow me to narrow my focus to areas that need more attention. As metrics are documented in real time this ensures I don’t travel down the wrong road for too long and and can change direction with ease.

If you are unfamiliar with metric based goals what I mean by them and the difference between non metric based goals is explained below.

Non metric based goals – I will read more books, I will give more to charity, I will increase traffic to my blog

Metric based goals – I will read 10 books each quarter, I will give 5% of my salary to charity, I will publish 1 blog post every week and increase my blog views by 10% each month

As mentioned above (in the internet marketing section) I track 16 metrics across 6 social media platforms. I also track metrics for each area of my life as in the sections above. This may sound like a lot of work but just like metrics in business, when you get used to setting, tracking and using valuable information from metrics they can become quiet addictive! #Lean

THE END

That’s it, 2015 was like most years, full of ups and downs.

Now that the annual review is complete it’s time for goal setting for 2016 – my goals for 2016 will be similar to those for 2015 and will be all about the loves in my life –  my boyfriend Mike, my family, my friends, travel, photography, Lean, internet marketing and creating more time, space and abundance (using Lean principles of course!) to live the life I love.

I hope you had a wonderful 2015 and that you are setting stretch goals for 2016.

I wish you and your loved ones a safe, healthy and prosperous New Year. May 2016 be a transformational year for you all. Always remember small consistent changes will lead to huge transformations.

HAPPY NEW YEAR

A sincere THANK YOU to everyone who has shared this journey with me, each and every one of you have a made a positive impact on my life. A special and heartfelt THANK YOU to my boyfriend Mike, my family and my friends for making each year better than the last, you are the reason for it all.

THANK YOU

Safe Travels,

Siobhain

My Top 20 Books For 2015

January 3, 2016

READING 2

Following on from my 2015 Annual Review, here are my top 20 books for 2015. One of my goals for 2015 was to read/listen to a book every 2 weeks – 26 books in total for the year.  Reaching and exceeding this goal was thanks to audiobooks which enabled me to listen to far more books than I would ever be able to read.

MIND BODY SPIRIT

The Power Of Now – Eckhart Tolle  –  After previously reading this book twice, this year I listened to ‘The Power of Now’ four times, for those of you who have read or listened to this book you will understand why. For anyone who has not read this book I suggest you read it, study it and live the teachings, it will transform your life.

A New Earth – Eckhart Tolle  – This book expands on the teachings and lessons from ‘The Power of Now’. Just like ‘The Power Of Now’, it is a deep book, full to the brim with immense learnings and a message so powerful you will have no choice but to be transformed by it.

I Can See Clearly Now – Dr Wayne Dyer (RIP) – I love this book as it gives an immense insight into the man’s life whose teachings have had such a positive impact on my life. I read this book before Wayne passed away on August 30th and again after Wayne’s passing. Each time I read it, a new light on Wayne’s amazing life and how he dedicated all he was to others. He was an amazing teacher and his legacy lives on in through his books and his family.

The Power Of IntentionReal Magic, There’s A Spiritual Solution To Every Problem  and Excuses Begone – Dr Wayne Dyer (RIP) –  I have yet to find a book by Wayne that I do not find fascinating, all of the above are totally worth a read.

The Soul Of Leadership – Deepak Chopra – A beautiful book by an incredible teacher, this book enables the reader to identify and develop their core values which in turn enables them to lead others to greatness through creativity, intelligence and organising power. This is a really easy to read book jam packed with amazing insights.

The 7 Spiritual Laws Of Success – Deepak Chopra – Another beautiful book by Deepak, easy to read and a book you will want to visit again and again.

What I Know For Sure – Oprah Winfrey – This pocket sized book by Oprah is divided into the following themes with accompanying essays  – joy, resilience, connection, gratitude, possibility, awe, clarity, and power. It is an absolute joy to read and a huge source of positivity and inspiration.

Social Intelligence – Daniel Goleman – The author of Emotional Intelligence brings us through a new level of intelligence –  Social intelligence. This book took me ages to finish as it is pretty deep but it was well worth it and I look forward to reading it again. A must read for anyone interested in human relationships and psychology.

Here is what amazon has to say about this remarkable book,

‘Far more than we are consciously aware, our daily encounters with parents, spouses, bosses, and even strangers shape our brains and affect cells throughout our bodies—down to the level of our genes—for good or ill. In Social Intelligence, Daniel Goleman explores an emerging new science with startling implications for our interpersonal world. Its most fundamental discovery: we are designed for sociability, constantly engaged in a “neural ballet” that connects us brain to brain with those around us.

Our reactions to others, and theirs to us, have a far-reaching biological impact, sending out cascades of hormones that regulate everything from our hearts to our immune systems, making good relationships act like vitamins—and bad relationships like poisons. We can “catch” other people’s emotions the way we catch a cold, and the consequences of isolation or relentless social stress can be life-shortening. Goleman explains the surprising accuracy of first impressions, the basis of charisma and emotional power, the complexity of sexual attraction, and how we detect lies.’

10% Happier – Dan Harris – This is an insightful, uplifting and really funny book. In this book Dan Harris takes us through his journey to the top of his game which culminated in a nationally televised panic attack. The lifestyle changes Dan makes after this panic attack take him on a different journey, a more inward journey that leads him to a much happier place. Dan’s upbeat, honest and humorous personality is what makes this book such a pleasure to read.

LEAN

Andy and Me – Pascal Dennis – This was my favourite book of 2015. This book was chosen by my team at work to read and review and everyone thoroughly enjoyed it. I am a big fan of Pascal Dennis and he ensures Andy and Me is an easy read with a really big message that simplifies the complexity of Lean through storytelling – genius!

The Lean Start Up – Eric Ries – This is a super book on how Lean methodology can be used to remove waste in Start Ups – a most excellent read. Eric explains how Lean tools and methodology that have been around for more than thirty years can be used to transform how we create products and sustain start up business’s in the digital age.

SOCIAL MEDIA

Platform – Michael Hyatt – Platform is an extremely well written book on building and sustaining an audience online. It is jam packed with excellent advice from a man who really knows what he is talking about. Michael Hyatt spent years in the publishing world and now runs his highly successful blog where he shares his knowledge and wisdom generously. If you have an interest in social media or internet marketing then this is the book for you.

Will The Real You Please Stand Up – Kim Garst  – Another great book on social media and internet marketing by someone who knows what they are talking about. Kim Garst is a highly successful business woman who knows the world of social media and internet marketing inside out. This book is a great read.

7 Habits Of Highly Effective People and  The 3rd Alternative – Steven Covey – Steven Covey is a literary genius and anything written by him should be taken very seriously.

Linchpin – Seth Godin and All Marketers Tell Stories – Seth Godin – another genius writer, storyteller, marketer and businessman,  I find anything that Seth Godin writes fascinating. These 2 books are no exception.

How To Win Friends And Influence People – Dale Carnegie – What a great book. This book was first published in 1936 and has sold over 15 millions copies. The advice and learnings in this book have stood the test of time and are as relevant today as they were in 1936.
